At Home With our "Loved Ones"

Writer: Matthew BartlettMatthew Bartlett

COVID 19 has thrown us all for a loop. Things that we all assumed were normal, everyday and consistent; suddenly seem rare or at risk. Many of our previously available psychological release valves (i.e. sports events, leisure, social clubs, gatherings etc.) have been shut down, cancelled or are looked upon by many with an eye suspicion. While the events of early 2020 have raised everyone's stress level, with the bad comes, of course, some good. We are getting to spend more time with our close family...much, much more time. While this increase in time and proximity is often fantastic, as a single father of a seven year old, I know that there are only so many times a day you can play "Dad, be a plant eating dinosaur while I am a futuristic t-rex robot." Similar difficulties occur as couples are forced to spend more time with their spouse; grandparents are forced to spend more time with grand kids; and we are constantly being told that friends are "off limits." Further adding to our stress is a plethora of social media posts that would lead a person to believe that our home is the only home in which "time spent together" causes increased stress. As an attorney, let me assure you that when you are frustrated by being with your family or spouse, you are not alone. Social distancing has caused a substantial spike in the frequency and number of domestic violence and child abuse incidents. If you find yourself in such a situation; take a moment to, go outside and a walk. Don't let the moment effect your future. Most importantly, don't be afraid to call someone. Reach out. If you need legal advice on the implications of actions you may have taken or on splitting up an moving forward, feel free to call me. I would be happy to speak with you free of charge. If I can help you avoid a potentially disastrous situation I would be happy to do so.
